TASTING NOTE

Aan de Breede Beek Regent 2018

red wine

Our rating

7.5 /10
The Regent of Aan de Breede Beek is a red wine with a strong and still young, green character. It has the smell and taste of forest fruits, liquorice and spices like juniper, bay leaves and vanilla. The taste of cedarwood and liquorice are quite dominantly present after the 9 months of ageing on new barriques. Although the wine is already fine to drink now, the aromas of the fruit and cedarwood are not yet fully integrated. We expect that the wine will improve by letting it age for at least another year. When you prefer drinking red wine when it is still young, we would advise to decant it and to combine it with a hearty meal such as stew, pumpkin, old cheeses or red meat.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Wine tasting: 27 Oct 2020
Appearance
A clear, purple colored wine with a deep color intensity. Some legs are visible on the glass.
Nose
The wine has a clean, developing nose, with a medium+ aroma intensity of forest fruits and oaky characteristics. We smell forest fruit, blackcurrant, prunes, cedarwood, juniper, bay leaves and vanilla.
Palate
A dry wine, with medium alcohol, medium acidity and medium tannins. The wine is medium+ bodied with a medium+ flavor intensity. We taste blackberries, black prunes and cederwood. The taste of liquorice and cederwood is quite dominant. This is adjusted with some tones of green bellpepper and more spicy tones of black pepper. The wine has an ending of medium+ length.
Quality Assessment
This is a good wine. The dominant taste of cedar and liquorice is due to the fact that the wine is still young. It has aged for 9 months in wood and still needs to mature. We tasted the wine again after keeping it properly closed for 2 days and already it matured quite well. The dominant tastes of cedar and liquorice faded more into the background and integrated better with the fruity aromas. For that reason we recommend to open the wine several hours before drinking or to decant it.
