TASTING NOTE

Cretier’s Tawny TROP 2010

fortified, red wine

Our rating

8 /10
This is a very successful fortified wine with a lot of very attractive aspects. The aroma and flavor are characterized by dried red fruits like figs, prunes, raisins and dates, supplemented by tones of nuts and cooked fruit. It has some sharp edges due to a slightly strong scent of alcohol but all in all it is very surprising, well-made and excellent to drink. The wine reminds us more of Oloroso sherry and Madeira than the Port wine the name (“TROP”) seems to refer to. A pleasant surprise!

Detailed Tasting Notes

Wine tasting: 1 Dec 2020
Appearance
A clear, tawny-colored wine with a medium color intensity and legs visible on the glass.
Nose
The wine has a clean nose, it is fully developed with a medium+ aroma intensity and characteristics of dried and cooked fruit, alcohol and marmalade. It has a broad palate of aromas of figs, raisins, prunes, caramel and rose hips. These fruity aromas are complemented by oxidation scents of Oloroso sherry.
Palate
The wine has medium+ sweetness, high alcohol, medium- acidity and low tannins. The wine is medium-bodied and has an expressive taste of medium+ flavor intensity. We taste an interesting palate of dried fruits like prunes, figs, dates and raisins, and flavors of cooked fruit that remind us somewhat of Madeira.
Quality Assessment
A very successful fortified wine with a lot of very attractive aspects, well-made and excellent to drink. It has some sharp edges due to the strong scent of alcohol. The wine is ready to drink and will not improve with further ageing.
