TASTING NOTE

white wine

Johanniter in ’t Bos 2018

Our rating

A rather special wine, at least a wine that requires an advanced drinker to be appreciated. There is great controversy about the quality of the wine in the tasting panel. Scores range from good to bad. It is a confusing wine with a diverse aroma and palate, ranging from fruit and flowers to bitter and chemical. We cannot decide whether this is intended or whether the wine contains errors. After a few hours, more fruity flavors take the upper hand and the chemical hints disappear but a ‘typical’ (and not per se pleasant) palate remains the best conclusion.

Tasting Notes

Wine tasting: 3 Mar 2020
Appearance
A clear wine with a pale color intensity and a remarkable pink color. We notice some light petillance in the glass.
Nose
The wine has a clean nose, it is still youthful with a medium+ aroma intensity. We smell a lot of different things, which makes it a somewhat confusing wine. Scents of flowers and fruit (grapefruit and cantaloupe melon) alternate with chemical notes of glue or acetone.
Palate
An off-dry wine with a medium+ level of acidity and medium alcohol. Body and flavor intensity are both medium+. The wine is light bodied with a medium- flavor intensity. The palate varies from tones of sweet fruits (lychee and cantaloupe melon) to more bitter aromas of grapefruit and even chemical taste of glue. The finish is medium+ of length.
Quality Assessment
There is great controversy about the quality of the wine. Scores range from good to bad. It is a confusing wine with a diverse aroma and palate, ranging from fruit and flowers to bitter and chemical. We cannot decide whether this is intended or whether the wine contains errors. In any case, we agree that it is a special wine, at least a wine for the advanced drinker to be appreciated. After a few hours, more fruity flavors take the upper hand and the chemical hints disappear but a ‘typical’ (and not per se pleasant) palate remains the best conclusion.
