TASTING NOTE

St Martinus 7 Zonden 2016-2018

red wine

Our rating

8.5 /10
This very special wine is a blend from three years (2016, 2017 and 2018). With 3 years of ageing in wooden barrels it has a firm bite and strong character. It took us a while to define the quite typical aroma characteristics of beetroot and green asparagus in the wine! These vegetal aromas are combined with the scents and flavors of black currants, black cherries and green herbs. Since the taste is very pronounced, we think this is a real food-pairing wine. Combine it with deer back, old goat cheese or boeuf bourguignon, and you will forget about your sins :)

Detailed Tasting Notes

Wine tasting: 3 Nov 2021
Appearance
A clear, ruby-colored wine with a medium color intensity.
Nose
The wine has a clean nose, is still youthful with a medium+ aroma intensity with fruity and vegetal characteristics. We smell a very typical smell of beetroot and green asparagus. In addition we smell blackcurrant jam or even cassis syrup and rhubarb with some hints of lime or wet pebble.
Palate
A dry wine, with medium+ alcohol, medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The wine is medium-bodied with a medium+ flavor intensity. We taste a palate with fruity, vegetal and herbaceous characteristics. It has flavors of beetroot, black cherries, roses, rosemary, bay leaf and pine. The ending is medium+ in length with a bit of a mouthfeel of drying tea.
Quality Assessment
The wine is well made, with a character that is not typically Dutch. Since the taste is very pronounced, we think this is a wine to be paired with food. Combine it with deer back, old goat cheese or boeuf bourguignon, and you will forget all your sins :) A very good wine!
