TASTING NOTE

Thorn Frühburgunder 2018

red wine

Our rating

7.5 /10
A very excentric and fascinating wine with the typical aroma of a herbal drink and flavors of rose hips, rooibos and tamarillo. Well made and balanced but we doubted whether the wine might be past its peak, since the wine shows some oxidative characteristics. Nevertheless a good wine, but we are curious about a new year to be able to compare it! Not suitable for ageing.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Wine tasting: 23 Feb 2022
Appearance
A clear, tawny-orange colored wine with medium- color intensity
Nose
The wine has a clean nose with a medium aroma intensity. The aromas are fully developed. The aromas have herbal and fruity characteristics. We smell a combination of rose hips, canned strawberries, rooibos tea and alpine herbs, which reminds us of a herbal drink.
Palate
A dry wine with medium acidity and medium-high alcohol (13.5%). The wine has a rather light character: it is not very strong-bodied (medium-), has a medium flavor intensity and low tannins. The palate of the wine has fruity, vegetable and herbaceous characteristics. We taste rose hips and rooibos, caramellized sugar, in combination with more vegetable flavours from tamarillo, beetroot, many herbs and some hints of white pepper.
Quality Assessment
A very excentric and fascinating wine. Well made and balanced but might be tasted too late and past its peak, since all fresh fruity aromas have disappeared and the wine shows some oxidative characteristics. Nevertheless a good wine. Not suitable for further ageing.
